A good friend of mine and one of the top realtors in the city of Charlote is Steve Lepow (Remaxx Realty). He was sharing me recently how well positioned Archadeck is in this economy. He went on to explain that people trying to sell their homes are now being scrutinized when it comes to their outdoor living space. Lepow says, “it used to be the potential buyer would go straight to the kitchen and then want to see the master bedroom. Now, they go to the kitchen and immediately look into the backyard”. If you have not remodeled or upgraded your backyard, you may be behind the times in trying to sell your home. As the owner of Archadeck of Charlotte, I am seeing it first hand as homeowner’s are being forced to take their homes off of the market and invest in a new paver patio, deck, or even screen porch area as outdoor living in Charlotte is the big thing these days. As a professional remodeler and general contractor in the Charlotte area, we get to see all types of work done by “handymen”. These are the weekend warriors who are saving money by constructing projects themselves. Some are quite impressive, most look like they were done by someone who does not build full time.
So what about trying to tackle an Outdoor Fireplace or Firepit? There is more to it than stacking bricks or stones upon one another or even more than purchasing the firebox that is prefabricated. The real difference in addition to craftsmanship is the design of the flu. You will find smoke does not automatically go where you want it. There is a science and art to designing the chimney’s and the pros know it! Firepits are often major saftey hazzards and eye sores. When you want to do your own handy work, think twice when it comes to the outdoor fireplaces, its worth it to hire a pro!

Archadeck of Charlotte was recently hired to design and build a large room addition in Charlotte, NC. The client’s objective was to design a room for an aging parent. The more we found out about the circumstances the customer was going through, the more sense it made why they were doing this. The cost of health care for assisted living is so high that the room addition will pay for itself in 2 years. In addition, the value that it adds to their home will bring a large return. This investment on this remodeling project will actually save them the on-going expense of assisted living and provide a great return on investment! The market in Charlotte has really grown for paver patio’s. When Archadeck of Charlotte pioneered outdoor living over 20 years ago in Charlotte, it was all decks and screen porches. Today, a good deal of what we build are paver patio’s, outdoor kitchens, and outdoor firepits and fireplaces. The whole “hardscape” category has grown immensly and is often designed in combination with decks that are elevated off of the ground. The outlook for Charlotte outdoor living appears to be very strong with paver patio’s playing an increasingly larger role as part of the picture. There are some keys to a successful paver patio. Archadeck of Charlotte has been designing and building more and more decks with firepits each year. It’s a great way to warm up your outdoor living space very affordably. At Archadeck of Charlotte, we get asked all of the time if we really need to pull a building permit when constructing a deck, screen porch, sunroom, outdoor fireplace,etc…. The answer is absolutely!
Most contractors try to avoid pulling a building permit here in North Carolina. The cost of the permit is reasonable (usually under $200) but complying with the many building codes can be quite costly. Why should you the consumer care? These building codes change each year and they are meant to protect you from saftey hazards and poor building practices. In addition, when you go to sell your home and if the buyer hires an inspector prior to purchase, you will run into a large expense as well as potentially turning off the buyer! For your own protection, ask your contractor up front whether they intend to pull the permit and then make sure they follow through and call in for inspections of their work!

Archadeck of Charlotte has seen huge growth in demand for outdoor fireplaces. Whether it is a stand alone on a paver patio or integrated into a screen porch, outdoor fireplaces are going up in neighborhoods all over Charlotte. Most people opt for the real wood burning type and perhaps run a gas line out to make it easier to get the fire going.
The trick with outdoor fireplaces is to make sure the firebox and flu are designed correctly to ensure the smoke goes up, not out.
